If you’re just setting up house on your own for the first time, you may forget to keep a few things around. You could find at inconvenient times that you don’t have extra towels like your mom used to keep around or that you don’t have a single bandage in the house when you desperately need to slap one on a paper-cut wound. Things like this can be particularly annoying, so be sure that you stock up on the medical supplies that you need before you actually need them.
It’s a great idea to set aside a particular area of your home for medical supplies. Many people have a medicine cabinet built in behind their bathroom mirrors, but this area may not be big enough to store many essentials. You could also keep supplies in a hall closet, in a kitchen cabinet, or under the bathroom sink where there’s usually more room.
In times of crisis – or even miniature crises like bleeding from a shaving wound – it’s really helpful to know exactly where your medical supplies are. For this reason, you should definitely invest in a first aid kit or a basket for all your supplies. Make sure that things can stay fairly organized, which will help you find things more easily.
As you’re putting together supplies, make sure that you have basic things like tape, dressings, athletic bandages, stick-on bandages, and antiseptics. Make a list of everything that’s in your medical supplies area, and be sure that you have things for just about any minor situation you can think of. Don’t forget about anti-itch cream, painkiller, upset stomach medication, and things like that.
Then, every few months you can rifle through your kit, making sure that all your supplies are stocked. Also, be sure to throw out any supplies that are outdated, as they can be ineffective or even slightly dangerous.
